PORTUGAL :: A BRAND :: THE PORTUGUESE DISCOVERIES

This brave countries’ most known period is the golden time of the Discoveries, during which this small country was the centre of the world, of the main commercial routes and controlled two thirds of the globe.

Since the first expedition in 1415, to Ceuta with the sponsorship of the British Crown, until the end of the 16th century Portugal was the pioneer on all main sea ways and related technology around the sphere!

Madeira, Azores, Cape of Good Hope, India, Brazil, among numerous other achievements allowed not only Portugal but all the continents to start communicating. The Portuguese language is still today spoken by 215 million people and is therefore the 5th most spoken language in the world. This was not the single legacy left by the Portuguese, but also the Portuguese architecture that can still be found in all corners of the world from Brazil to Africa, from India to Macau!

An untold Story related to the Discoveries is the British 5 o’clock tea! This habit that is today know to be a British cultural tradition was, in fact, an created in Portugal during the Portuguese discoveries, as we were in close contact to China. Later, in the 17th century, a Portuguese princess D. Catarina de Bragança married Charles II and among her countless belongings was a trunk of tea, which she used to drink in the afternoon! It was also this Portuguese princess that is told to have brought to Britain the worldwide know orange marmalade (typical of the Alentejo region where she grew) and the use of the fork!
