PORTUGAL :: THE COUNTRY :: MADEIRA ARCHIPELAGO Garden Isle
Madeira is an autonomous Portuguese archipelago located in the North Atlantic Ocean constituted by 3 sets of islands: Madeira; Porto Santo and Savage isles. Originally known as the Purple Islands by the Roman Empire, these were re-discovered by Portuguese navigators in 1418. Due to Madeira’s geographical location and mountainous landscape, the island has a subtropical climate with temperatures around 22 degrees Celsius in the summer and about 16 degrees Celsius during the winter. Madeira is well-known for its Madeira Wine; flowers and Levadas (aqueducts) which carry water to the agricultural regions. The golf courses and nautical activities are other key points of the island.
